Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek – Where Wilderness Meets the Everest Trail

Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek is one of Nepal’s most thrilling and least-traveled high-altitude adventures. It connects the mystical Rolwaling Valley with the legendary Khumbu (Everest) region, offering a raw and unforgettable Himalayan experience. This trek is perfect for seasoned trekkers and ambitious mountaineers who crave more than a typical trail.

From turquoise glacial lakes and soaring snow-capped peaks to quiet Sherpa villages and technical alpine crossings, the journey blends culture, challenge, and remoteness. Moreover, it’s an epic adventure in Nepal for anyone who seeks to escape the crowded trails and explore the hidden corners of the Himalayas.

Often overshadowed by the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Tashi Lapcha Pass route is a true gem. If you’re looking for off-the-beaten-path treks in Nepal, this one delivers solitude, endurance, and jaw-dropping scenery all the way through.

Where is Tashi Lapcha Pass and Why is it Special?

The Tashi Lapcha Pass, at 5,755 meters, sits at the border of Rolwaling Valley (Dolakha district) and the Khumbu region (Solukhumbu). Located just south of Mt. Pachermo (6,273m), this high alpine pass is guarded by towering glacial ridges of the Rolwaling Himal.

Furthermore, crossing this pass feels like a real Himalayan expedition. You’ll walk on ice, navigate loose moraines, and sometimes use ropes. For experienced trekkers and mountaineers, this offers a perfect mix of challenge and thrill.

The trail transitions dramatically—from forested hills and Buddhist villages in Rolwaling to massive glaciers and bustling Sherpa settlements in Khumbu. Consequently, it’s a unique cross-region trek that brings both serenity and adventure together.

Thinking of climbing? Check out our Rolwaling + Pachermo Peak Climbing package.

Route Overview: From Rolwaling to Khumbu

The trek begins in Simigaun, a hillside village in Dolakha. From there, you follow trails through rhododendron forests to Beding, a spiritual Sherpa village. As the trail continues, you move deeper into Rolwaling, reaching Na village and the stunning Tso Rolpa Lake, one of Nepal’s largest glacial lakes.

Afterward, the adventure intensifies as you climb toward Trakarding Glacier, preparing to cross the technical Tashi Lapcha Pass. The crossing itself is a highlight—icy paths, dramatic views, and a sense of real achievement. Eventually, after the pass, you descend into Thame and reach Namche Bazaar, the vibrant heart of the Khumbu region.

This journey blends the hidden tranquility of Rolwaling with the classic trekking atmosphere of Everest. Thus, it becomes a perfect Himalayan combo for serious adventurers.

Best Season for Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek

The best time to trek this route is from March to May and September to November. These months bring clear skies, stable weather, and better glacier conditions.

In contrast, avoid trekking during June to August, as monsoon rains can make trails slippery and limit visibility. Likewise, December to February brings extreme cold and deep snow—crossing the pass can be dangerous or even impossible.

For more remote treks in these seasons, also explore our Pikey Peak Trek and Dudh Kunda Trek.

Difficulty Level and Required Fitness

The Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek is classified as strenuous. This trek includes high altitudes (up to 5,755m), long trekking days (6–8 hours), and glacier crossings. As a result, you need excellent physical fitness, good stamina, and ideally, previous experience above 4,000m.

Technical sections—especially around Trakarding Glacier and the pass—may require crampons, ropes, or an ice axe. Fortunately, our expert guides and full crew provide all necessary support, training, and equipment.

This trek is not recommended for beginners. However, for adventure lovers, it’s one of the most rewarding challenges Nepal offers.

Permits and Logistics

To complete this trek, you’ll need a combination of trekking and climbing permits:

Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit (GCAP)

Sagarmatha National Park Permit

TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)

Pachermo Peak Permit (if climbing) – by Nepal Mountaineering Association

Thankfully, all permits are included in our package. We handle the paperwork so you can focus on the adventure.

Accommodation and Meals

From Simigaun to Na, basic teahouses are available. From there on, the trek enters full wilderness mode. Between Na and Thame, we provide fully supported camping with tents, kitchen staff, and nutritious hot meals.

Once you descend into Thame, Namche, and Lukla, you’ll stay in cozy mountain lodges with standard facilities. Moreover, meals include dal bhat, pasta, soups, potatoes, rice, tea, and energy-rich snacks to fuel your trek.

Extend Your Adventure

Want to level up the challenge? Pachermo Peak Climbing (6,273m) is a perfect summit to add after the pass. It’s non-technical but high in elevation, ideal for acclimatized trekkers.

Alternatively, after reaching Lukla, you can join our Island Peak Climb, trek to Everest Base Camp, or continue the Classic Jiri to Everest trail for a longer Himalayan journey.

Upper Dolpo Trek is one of the most challenging adventures experienced in rural areas of western Nepal. Dolpo region was lately opened to outsiders. Still, Upper Dolpo Trekking is off the beaten path and welcomes fewer visitors compared to other popular trekking regions.

Upper Dolpo is the largest district of Nepal based on land; which comprises a geographical structure quite similar to Tibetan highlands. Visit the deepest lake in the world, Shey Phoksundo. And get insight into the authentic lifestyle of local inhabitants. And encounter rare floras and faunas along strenuous ascent and descent. This aspect of the Upper Dolpo Trekking makes this trek one hell of an amazing experience.

Overview and Itinerary of Upper Dolpo Trek

We begin our Upper Dolpo Trek as we take a domestic flight to Nepalgunj followed by another flight to Juphal. It is the starting point of the trek from where we start our trekking activity. Towards astounding villages, settlements, lakes, waterfalls, ridges, mountains, yak pastures, etc. to Phoksundo Lake, Shey Gompa, and numerous other settlements. In adventurous passion, we get back to Juphal, Nepalgunj. And then we fly back to Kathmandu after more than twenty days of trekking in Dolpo.

During our Upper Dolpo Trek, we will be entering the region that seems like it is separated from the rest of the world. Along with the magical views of the Himalayas; the major highlights of this trek lie in its exploring and learning opportunity of local living and lifestyle. And finally, it takes you into the wild. Whereas, passing through a couple of main high passes namely Shey La at 5000 m and Jeng La at 5110 m; tests your fitness level.

Restricted Area Permit: Dolpo

Moreover, this is a fully tent camp trekking except in major cities, which is a heavenly experience for adventure lovers. Also, while embarking on the Upper Dolpo Trekking, trekkers require a special permit. Since the Dolpo region is a restricted area, a Restricted Area Permit is mandatory to visit the region. We will be arranging the permits and including their cost in the total trip cost of Upper Dolpo Trek.

Best time to trek to Dolpo

Regarding the best seasons, the months from May to November are an ideal time to join in. However, since the Dolpo region falls under rain-shadow area – which means the region receives much less rainfall even during the monsoon time, trekking to Dolpo in monsoon is also worthwhile. So, unlike many other regions in Nepal, trekking in Dolpo during the monsoon is not only possible but truly rewarding, with fewer crowds, lush valleys, and dramatic mountain views.

Who can trek to Upper Dolpo and how?

Upper Dolpo Trek is a long and challenging off-the-beaten-path adventure around remote areas of Nepal. Therefore it requires a high level of physical fitness along with a trekking experience around the Himalayan surroundings. Hence, if you are passionate about experiencing what it is like to trek into the wild then join our Upper Dolpo Trekking for an incredible adventure. For information about this trek or to join this trek, simply drop your inquiry or fill out the Booking form.

Along with the discovery and sighting of the extravagant landscapes on the edge of the Khumbu region; rarely and seldom visited by other tourists. This is a teahouse trek with camping only during the climb. The forest ranges are occupied by alpine meadows and glacial rocks.

View from Mera Peak and other attractions

One of the main reasons people climb Mera Peak is for the magnificent summit views of the over-8000-meter-mountains such as Mt. Everest, 8848m, Mt. Lhotse, 8516m, Mt. Cho Oyu, 8201m, Mt. Makalu, 8463m, and Mt. Kanchenjunga, 8586m. You shall have a glimpse of authentic Sherpa culture, green and lush landscapes, and quaint trekking trails are other attractions.

This unblemished area of the Everest region is proud of having gorgeous terraced grasslands, impenetrable forests, hastening tributaries, and yak pastures with the surroundings of the utmost premier mountains on the planet. Here in this wilderness of the Himalayas, the Sherpa guesthouse provides a welcoming place for exhausted and worn-out trekkers.

After completing this epic trek a sense of achievement and self-joy shall reward trekkers with the utmost respect for the Himalayas. As our Mera Peak Climbing comes to a conclusion, we shall retrace our steps and gradually follow the trail back to Lukla for a flight back to Kathmandu.

Everest Three Passes Trek gives you an overall Everest Trekking experience. You get to cross three high passes – Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La; along with an opportunity to visit Everest Base Camp. Ascending towards Gokyo Ri and Kala Patthar gives us breathtaking panoramic views of Everest and other surrounding peaks. It is considered to be a challenging trek and is preferred by adventure lovers who want to have it all.

This adventure is not just about Everest. It’s about discovering every highlight of the Khumbu region—from peaceful alpine lakes to remote Sherpa villages, and legendary Himalayan viewpoints to thrilling glacier crossings.

Overview of Everest Three Pass Trek

The Everest Three Pass trek adventure starts as we board a scenic mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. And then we trek towards Namche Bazaar, the home of Sherpas. After acclimatizing at Namche for two nights, we follow the popular Everest trail. Through Tengboche, Dingboche, and rest for another day at Chukkung; before crossing the first high pass of Kongma La at an altitude of 5,535m. Then we will be visiting Everest Base Camp via Lobuche and Gorakshep following a hike up to Kalapathar for panoramic views of snow-capped mountains including Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other neighboring peaks.

In terms of high-altitude trekking, the Three Passes Trek in Nepal is the most comprehensive Everest adventure—traversing different valleys, passes, and scenic trails that traditional Everest Base Camp trekkers rarely explore.

Dzong La, Cho La, and Renjo La | The 3 High Passes

We continue our trek via Dzong La before crossing the next pass of Cho La; which finally takes us to the pristine glacial lakes of Gokyo. We then hike up to Gokyo Ri for great panoramic views. From there, we make our way towards the final pass of Renjo La. Spending a night at Marlung, we descend towards Namche Bazar, Lukla, and fly back to Kathmandu. The Everest Three Passes Trek is all about experiencing the Khumbu region’s best high passes.

These three Himalayan passes aren’t just high—they are gateways to some of the most scenic alpine environments in the world. If you’re wondering which trek combines the best of Gokyo Lakes, Everest Base Camp, and off-the-beaten-path mountain crossings, this is the answer.

Who can join Three Passes Trek and how?

The Everest Three Pass Trek is perfect for any adventure lover who possesses a good level of physical fitness and the ability to cross three high-altitude passes. In order to avoid rainfall and for clear views, the best periods to undertake this trek are:

From mid-April to May in the Spring

And from mid-September to mid-November in Autumn.

The trek is physically demanding, but with proper acclimatization and guidance, it is achievable for dedicated trekkers. No prior mountaineering experience is necessary, but it helps if you’ve trekked in high altitudes before.

Tip: If you’re looking for a more gradual entry into the Khumbu region, consider our Gokyo Valley Trek or Everest Base Camp via Jiri for deeper acclimatization and a cultural detour.

If you’re planning to combine the Everest Three High Passes with a technical climb, our Island Peak Climbing or Lobuche Peak Climb offers an incredible way to summit a Himalayan peak after completing your trekking loop.

Why Everest Three Passes Trek is Nepal’s Best High Pass Trek

The Three Passes Trek offers what most treks in Nepal don’t—a complete loop, instead of a straight in-and-out trail. You’re not retracing your steps. Instead, you’re weaving through the entire Khumbu region, gaining altitude gradually, and descending through new paths with changing landscapes every day.

Other treks may take you to a base camp or a single destination. But this Everest High Passes Trek delivers an all-encompassing journey—Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, Gokyo Lakes & Gokyo Ri, and three alpine passes above 5,300m, all in one expedition.

This makes it one of the most comprehensive and high-reward trekking routes in Nepal, ideal for trekkers who want adventure and variety in their Himalayan experience.

Accommodation and Food Along the Trail | Everest 3 Passes Trek

Throughout the Everest Three Passes Trek, you’ll stay in locally owned teahouses that provide comfortable rooms and warm meals. As you move higher, the amenities become simpler, but the hospitality never fades.

Typical meals include dal bhat, noodle soups, fried rice, pasta, eggs, and Tibetan bread. Tea, coffee, and boiled water are always available. Carrying some high-calorie snacks and electrolyte sachets is recommended, especially for pass days.

Safety, Altitude, and Acclimatization for the Three High Pass Trekking

One of the key challenges of this trek is altitude sickness. That’s why our itinerary includes multiple acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, and Gokyo. These are crucial in helping your body adjust before crossing the high passes.

We also carry a first-aid kit, pulse oximeter, and oxygen if needed. In case of emergency, helicopter evacuation is available. We highly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering up to 6,000m.

Permits Required for the 3 Pass Trek

To undertake this trek, you will need:

Sagarmatha National Park Permit

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit

Upper Mustang Trek is an off-the-beaten-path adventure that offers a wonderful chance to explore the unique lifestyle, culture, and tradition of local inhabitants (referred to as highlanders); along with awesome views and spectacular landscapes. The Upper Mustang region is close to Tibet and there are many cultural and geographical similarities between the local Mustangi people and their Tibetan neighbors. The major highlight of this trip is Lo-Manthang and the surrounding areas which give a powerful insight into this isolated, picturesque, and enthralling region of Nepal. It is truly an amazing experience trekking on the trails of Upper Mustang Trek.

Overview of Upper Mustang Trek Itinerary

Our Upper Mustang Trek begins after we drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara and take a short flight to Jomsom. Then we set off towards Kagbeni, the entry point of the upper Mustang Region. Kagbeni is blessed with natural beauty and spectacular landscapes which the locals sometimes compare to heaven.

Following the banks of Kaligandaki River upstream via Chele, Syanbochen, Ghyami, and Charang, we reach the capital of Upper Mustang (Lo-Manthang). There are several thousand-year-old Buddhist monasteries like Lo-Gekar Gompa and Samye Gompa which are major attractions for trekkers in this region. They still have a tribal head whom they honor as a king.

Upper Mustang Trek gives us an opportunity to explore the unique local lifestyle, for instance, polygamy is still widespread here. The Upper Mustang Region was forbidden to visitors until 1991. But now this hidden kingdom is open to all travelers from all around the world. Most of the houses are made of stone and sun-baked mud bricks.

The celebration of the Tiji festival is another major attraction during the month of March on Upper Mustang Trek. Many trekkers who has already embarked on the Upper Mustang Trek prefers trekking to Upper Mustang with Tiji Festival Celebration as well. Our trekking trail further heads towards Ghiling and Chhuksang towards Jomsom from where we take a morning flight to Pokhara. And drive back to Kathmandu afterward.

Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit Costs

To trek in the culturally rich and restricted region of Upper Mustang, a special Upper Mustang Trekking Permit is mandatory. As the area lies within Nepal’s restricted zones, trekkers must obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) through a government-registered trekking agency. The Upper Mustang Special Permit costs USD 500 per person for the first 10 days, with an additional USD 50 per day thereafter.

Alongside this, you’ll also need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), which costs around NPR 3,000 (approx. USD 25–30).

Solo Trekking to Upper Mustang

Moreover, solo trekking or independent trekking is not allowed in Upper Mustang. A minimum of two trekkers accompanied by a licensed guide are required to obtain the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permits. These regulations help preserve the unique Tibetan-influenced culture and fragile ecosystem of the region. At Nepal Mountain Trekkers, we handle all permit arrangements on your behalf, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience as you explore the mystical landscapes of the former Kingdom of Lo.

Who can trek to Upper Mustang and how?

The Upper Mustang Trek is possible at any time of the year because this place lies in the rain shadow area. And receives much less rainfall, even during the monsoon season. You do not require previous trekking experience for trekking in Upper Mustang.

However, you need to possess sound physical fitness with a passion for exploring new places, environments, and cultures. Join this trek with Nepal Mountain Trekkers and have an authentic trekking in Nepal experience. Simply fill out the Inquiry form and let us know about your interest.
