Trip introduction

Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek gives you an alternative opportunity to go all the way to Everest Base Camp (EBC). During the 20 days of our Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek, we will follow the classic route to EBC that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa used in 1953. The Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that allows plenty of time to acclimatize and explore Sherpa culture. And also, to enjoy amazing views of the world’s highest Himalayan peaks including the top of the world, Mount Everest.

Overview of EBC Trek Via Jiri

Our trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Jiri from where we set out. You can take pride in this authentic trekking experience instead of taking a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. During this trek, you will walk through beautiful forests, beside the raging Dudh Koshi River. And capture amazing views of snow-capped mountains. It is also an opportunity to visit ancient monasteries, walk through beautifully sculptured mani walls, and gain insight into the culture and traditions of the Sherpas.

Reaching Everest Base Camp will be a great moment of pride for you. And you will also feel greater respect for those who have reached the summit. Another major highlight of this trip is the amazing panoramic views of snow-capped mountains including Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Amadablam, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Thamserku, and other neighboring peaks from Kalapathar. On our return, we revisit Lukla and catch a scenic mountain flight back to Kathmandu.

Best Season and Physical Fitness

The Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek offers a great acclimatization point for travelers, peak climbers, and mountaineers who possess a good level of physical fitness and have a passion for exploring the Everest region in a classic way.

Regarding the best season, the spring season is during the months from March to May; and the autumn season is from mid-September to mid-December. These times are regarded as the best time to undertake the classic route to the Everest Base Camp Trek with Nepal Mountain Trekkers. Without thinking twice, you can write your thoughts and queries regarding this trip in our email. And we will get back to you shortly with more details and specific information as per your necessity.

As you put your foot in the land of the Himalayas, after your flight lands in the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu, your trekking expedition in the Everest region is ready to welcome you in the coming days. After completing your formalities in the immigration of the airport you will be welcomed by our representative. After that, you will be transferred to the hotel of your stay by a private vehicle. Get rest for your jetlagged body and enjoy the delicious cuisine of the hotel besides the warm hospitality provided by the staff of the hotel. Get refreshed for the entertaining day tomorrow. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 2 : Kathmandu: Sightseeing and Trek Preparation::

We shall spend the day for the purpose of sightseeing the cultural and architectural heritage of Kathmandu Valley and interacting with the trekking guide who shall provide the necessary information for the strenuous trekking in the Everest region. The sightseeing of Kathmandu Valley includes exploration of the heritages included in the UNESCO world heritage site list. The marvels of the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the Buddhist pilgrimages of Boudhanath stupa (the largest Buddhist stupa in the world), and Swayambhunath Stupa or Monkey Temple (the 14th-century stupa) are the star attractions of this sightseeing. The other highlights are architectural masterpieces in Patan Durbar Square that have royal palaces, temples, artifacts, and sculptures mostly dating back to the 1600s in the regime of the Malla dynasty. After exploration, you’ll have interaction with the trekking guide and get yourself clarified about the issues related to the adventure. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 3 : Drive Kathmandu to Bhandar via Jiri::

Today we shall leave for the trekking region that shall begin from the spot of Bhandar via the beautiful hill town of Jiri, referred to as the Switzerland of Nepal. Located 187 km northeast of Kathmandu, Jiri can be reached after around 6-7 hours of a drive from Kathmandu. Traveling via the Araniko Highway that links Kathmandu to Tibet we cross the Sun Koshi River at Lamosaghu and then turn right along the Swiss road that leads us to Jiri. Following the trail of the first successful Everest expedition, we travel to Bhandar past the village of Shivalaya in a downhill ride on a single-lane road that is rather muddy and frequently bumpy. We pass through the green hills and valleys, torrential rivers and waterfalls, view of snow-capped mountains to the far distance, and the changing landscape as well as inhabitants en route coupled with the diversity of culture and tradition. Overnight in Bhandar.

Day 4 : Bhandar to Sete (2,575m/8,450 ft): 6/7 hrs::

This section of the trek starts with a descent to the Likhu River through smaller settlements such as Dokharpa and Gorunda. We pass through a steel bridge and over the Likhu River after which the trail has a gradual ascent to the small village of Kinja through a couple of suspension bridges, dense forests, smaller settlements, terraced cultivation fields, and lush greenery with a diverse landscape. After lunch at the stoppage of Kinja, there is a slow, long, and uphill climb and then a steep descent from the height of a ridge summit to the village of Sete after a long trek. The settlement of Kinja is dominated by the Newar and Magar community whereas Sete has domination of the Sherpa community which shows the diversity and richness this trek has to offer to the trekkers. We also explore through rhododendron forest before Sete, marvelous view of the surrounding landscape and settlements in the far distance from the high ridge after Kinja which form the highlight of today’s trek. Overnight in Sete.

Day 5 : Sete trek to Junbesi (2,670 m/8,760 ft): 6/7 hrs::

We shall have a bit of a challenging section today as we shall pass through the Lamjura La Pass to reach the destination of Junbesi. The initial section of this trail passes through the settlements of Dagchu and Goyam and in between them comes the two small ponds and after Goyam is the Mani wall. The trail is a gradual climb up until the Lamjura La Pass through the lodges and guesthouses, scattered farmhouses, and beautiful rhododendron forests. At the summit of the pass, the highest point between Jiri and Namche Bazaar, is the beautiful scenery of the surrounding landscape, green and lush hills after which there is a descent through forests that leads to the settlement of Taktor. Trekking ahead in the winding trail past the Thaktop Gompa to the right, Hillary school to the left of the trail, and traversing to the north side of the valley after a turn and a descent after some trekking leads to the Sherpa village of Junbesi. Overnight in Junbesi.

Day 6 : Junbesi Rest day and day hike to Idingma (2,810m/9,219 ft): 4-5 hrs::

This is the first rest day set aside in this strenuous journey to the Everest Base Camp. We shall explore the small Sherpa settlement of Junbesi and get an insight into the rich Sherpa culture, tradition, and lifestyle besides experiencing the warm and excellent hospitality of the local community. We shall have a short day hike to the nearby settlement of Idingma after crossing the Junbesi River. Further ahead to the north of the Idingma village is the settlement of Phungmuche which is another day hike option available to the trekkers. En route Phungmuche is the famous and ancient Thuptencholing monastery that has ornate wall hangings and heritages related to Buddhism, the traditional Sherpa art center, the Tibetan refugee settlement area, power plant, and the diverse vegetation, flora, and fauna. Exploring the landscape surrounding Junbesi we trek back to Junbesi. Overnight in Junbesi.

Day 7 : Junbesi trek to Nunthala (2,220m/7,280 ft): 6 hrs::

Trekkers shall have longer trekking than the previous day’s trek and several ups and downs until they reach the destination of Nunthala. Crossing the Junbesi River on a wooden bridge and following the trail to Khumbu in the trail junction, trekkers descend to the settlement of Salung after an uphill climb to Phurteng and past the viewpoint of Everest, Thamserku, and Mera peak prior to Phurteng. Further ahead in the trail and past the hydropower prayer wheels, forests with a variety of flora and fauna overlooking the trail, ascending the Taksindu La to reach the Taksindu, trekkers undergo an exciting and enriching trekking section. Exploring the cheese factory in Taksindu and crossing some streams in between, trekkers then have a climb after crossing a wooden bridge to reach Nunthala. Overnight in Nunthala.

Day 8 : Nunthala to Bupsa (2,360 m/7,740 ft): 5/6 hrs::

With a steep descent from Nunthala at the start of the trek, trekkers continue to the Dudh Koshi river bridge and traverse ahead past the settlement of Jubling, the Rai village to the viewpoint of Khumbila past the dense forests and terraced fields. The trek from Jubing onwards shall be a climb to the village around a small hill which shall then continue to the village of Kari Khola. Ahead on the trail, trekkers need to have a steep climb on the hill leading to the destination for today, the village of Bupsa. Changing landscape, powerhouse, smaller settlements, and unique cultures make the trek an enriching experience. Overnight in Bupsa.

Day 9 : Bupsa to Chheplung (2,700m/8,858ft): 5/6 hrs::

Today’s section of the trek shall join the popular trekking trail beginning from Lukla, at Chheplung. Crossing the bridge at Kharte and climbing gradually on the trail we ascent cautiously to the Kari La on a rather slippery trail after which we traverse along the serpentine path to cross a couple of streams that lead to Paiyo. Ahead in the trail we pass through the trail overlooked by the forest of oak, pine, bamboo, and birch and navigate through the Chutok La before descending to the settlement of Surke, a stoppage of an overnight stay for some trekkers. Crossing another stream on a bridge and trekking ahead we reach a trail junction; a path leads the trekkers to the Lukla Airport and the other goes straight and joins the popular trekking trail from Lukla at the settlement before Chheplung. Prior to joining the popular trail before Chheplung, we pass through smaller settlements along the torrential Dudh Koshi River. Overnight in Chheplung.

Day 10 : Chheplung – Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,280 ft): 5/6 hrs::

From this section onwards you may experience an increased number of trekkers before and after your trekking group as we are in the popular section of the Everest base camp trek. Encountering the train of porters, trekkers, locals, and their animals we march gradually ahead in the trail with Namche Bazaar as the destination for today. Starting past the Mani walls, trekkers move past the viewpoint of Kusum Kangara, the settlement of Nurning, the prayer wheels, and over several suspension bridges before reaching the settlement of Phakding. Further ahead is the first viewpoint of Kongde Ri and ancient Chorten we enter the valley of Benkar after a turn in the trail. We reach ahead to Monjo, the gateway to the Sagarmatha National Park (a protected area famous for rare wildlife, diverse flora and fauna and diverse vegetation, climatic zones, and a variety of terrains), and then to the settlement of Jorsale. After crossing the confluence of Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi at Larja Dobhan, we trek forward to the Namche Bazaar where we have a steep climb of around an hour and a half. Before reaching Namche we have the viewpoint that provides a view of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Taboche, and others. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 11 : Acclimatization Day – Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,284ft)::

We will have a resting day in Namche Bazaar today as it is important for us to acclimatize before proceeding to higher altitudes in this trek. There are several options for the trekkers today. Trekkers may proceed for the day hike to Everest View Hotel for the panoramic view of Everest, Ama Dablam, and other mountains. The villages of Khumjung (famous for the ancient monastery decorated with ornate carvings and the skull of Yeti, the school founded by Sir Edmund Hillary), and Khunde are other popular destinations for day hikes from Namche Bazaar. For a little longer day hike trekkers prefer the village of Thame. Sherpa Culture Museum in Namche provides the trekkers with information on Sherpa culture, flora and fauna of surrounding areas, history of mountaineering, and other information. After exploring the several dimensions of Namche Bazaar, we trek back to the hotel of our stay. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 12 : Namche Bazzar to Tengboche (3,870m/12,694ft): 5/6 hrs::

The higher we ascent in this trek the better view of the landscape and the natural, scenic, and biotic diversity we have. We start after breakfast with a leisurely march through the forest with a variety of flora and fauna as well as majestic mountains overlooking the trail. Heading in the northwestern direction after a steep climb out of the town to a rise from where the view of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam is revealed with spectacular scenery. Trekking on a series of ridges with short climbs in between we follow a trail high above the torrential river to reach the small settlement of Kyanjoma. Descending onto the bridge across Imja River and ahead to Phunki Tenga, we reach almost half of today’s trail. Ahead in the trail is a long climb of 2-3 hours on a ridge leading to the destination for today, Tengboche. One of the finest monasteries in the region, the Tengboche monastery is a good spiritual experience for trekkers with breathtaking scenery and a marvelous view of the Himalayas. Overnight in Tyangboche.

Day 13 : Tengboche to Dingboche (4,360 m/14,300 ft): 5/6 hrs::

The destination for today is the occasional summer settlement and the highest settlement on this trail to Everest Base Camp, the settlement of Dingboche. The trek starts with the gradual climb down to the settlement of Deboche past the Chortens and prayer stones. Another couple of hours trek leads us to the village of Pangboche, which boasts of having the oldest monastery in the Khumbu region. A short exploration of the monastery is preferred by some trekkers. An hour beyond the settlement of Pangboche is the small village of Somare and in a winding trail, we branch off towards Dingboche along the Imja River. Gradually gaining height along the trail, we march at a decent pace to reach the settlement of Dingboche after around 3 hours. This entrance of Khumbu Valley provides another picturesque landscape, alpine vegetation, and a glimpse of rich Sherpa culture at a higher altitude. Overnight in Dingboche.

Day 14 : Dingboche – Lobuche (4,940 m/16,207 ft): 2/4 hours::

We have a shorter trek day in store for you so as to assist the trekkers to adapt to the increasing altitude, thinner air, and rough terrain. We trek in the northwestern direction from Dingboche with a gradual ascent through the small settlement of Dusa before we reach another tiny settlement of Dughla for a break and lunch stoppage. Ahead after Dughla, we reach the memorials established to commemorate the climbers who lost their lives during their attempt to conquer the world’s tallest mountain peak. From this point onwards, the trail starts leveling out. We trek over the lateral moraine formed because of the debris of Khumbu Glacier to the east side of the trail. The trail is overlooked by several mountain peaks among which the towering Nuptse and Lhotse are the prominent peaks. After all these highlights en route, we reach Lobuche. Overnight in Lobuche.

Day 15 : Lobuche – Gorak Shep (5,170 m/16,961ft) – Everest Base Camp (5,364 m/17,594 ft) – Gorak Shep : 7/8 hrs::

A big day. We start today from Lobuche, the traditional start point of ascent to Everest Base camp, by following a trail through the exciting valley side of the Khumbu Valley and gaining altitude in a steady manner. The strenuous terrain makes the trek a rather difficult one. We trek across the rubbles of a tributary glacier where the Khumbu glacier comes into view and ahead in the trail we reach the island of sparse grasses below the famous Kala Patthar, in short, another famous destination of Gorak Shep. Once a summer yak herding meadow, Gorak Shep boats are a hub for trekkers aiming for the ascent to Kala Patthar as well as the Everest Base Camp. After a lunch break at Gorak Shep, we trek for around 3 hours to reach the Everest Base Camp through the Moraine crest and walk on the famous Khumbu Glacier itself along the New Moraine route. Spending some time in this inspirational place we capture some memories and trek back to Gorak Shep overnight. Overnight in Gorak Shep.

Day 16 : Gorak Shep – Kala Patthar (5,545 m/18,192 ft) – Pheriche (4,280 m/14,070 ft): 7/8 hrs::

Get ready to have one of the most picturesque and breathtaking views of the Himalayas from the black rock hill of Kala Patthar, seemingly dwarfed by the majestic mountains. We start before daybreak to have a view of the sunrise over the Himalayas. The scene where the rising sun paints its color on the Himalayas and transforms the landscape into a beautiful canvas is once-in-a-lifetime scenery. Trekkers catch their breath several times during the climb to this small hill which is also used to capture the beauty of the surrounding. After having the beautiful scenery we trek down to Gorak Shep for some refreshments. We then retrace our steps to Lobuche and forward to the destination of Pheriche after leaving the surrounding dominated by glaciers, Himalayas, and lateral moraines of the glaciers. Pheriche has a permanent clinic established by the Himalayan Rescue Association to provide medical facilities in the region which has foreign doctors for the treatment of patients. Overnight in Pheriche.

Day 17 : Pheriche – Tengboche- Khumjung (3,780 m/12402 ft): 5/6 hrs::

We have a faster trek than the uphill climb along the same trail. We trek past the smaller settlements of Somare, Choluneha, and others to reach the ancient settlement of Pangboche past Pheriche Pass, crossings over the Imja River, and several small Chortens, prayer stones, and prayer flags. Further down the trail, we reach the junction of the trinity ways to Gokyo Valley, Khumjung village, and Namche Bazaar past the river crossing at Phunke Tenga. Shorter trek ahead in the trail we reach the beautiful Khumjung village past the other smaller settlement of Sansa. A marvelous view of the Himalayas, dense forests of rhododendron with rare species of wildlife, and strikingly beautiful scenery make the trek an entertainment experience. Overnight in Khumjung.

Day 18 : Khumjung -Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft): 7/8 hrs::

This section of the trek has the last section with a physical trek along this landscape rich in natural diversity, marvelous scenery, and rich cultural heritage. We leave the famous and beautiful village and trek back through the lush greenery, views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse Shar, Taboche, and others, past the gateway of Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo, several popular settlements along the trail, the confluence of two of the mightiest rivers of the region Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi River at Larja Dobhan, several suspension bridges, prayer flags, Mani walls, and Prayer stones en route before we reach to the destination of Lukla for onward destination of Kathmandu on a scenic flight. Overnight in Lukla.

Day 19 : Lukla – Kathmandu::

This is the end of the trekking experience that retraces the trekking trail once followed by the legendary Everest summiteers Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. The short and scenic flight past the vicinity of the Himalayas, over the lush valleys and green hills, serpentine shaper rives, and diverse landscape makes the flight a mesmerizing experience. We shall start early for the airport as the flight to and from Lukla generally starts before the weather creates disturbances. After the flight, we shall get you transferred to the hotel of your stay. Explore the surrounding areas of the hotel and go for some souvenir shopping for the near and dear ones. Pack your bags for the onward destination to your native place. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 20 : Departure Day::

Today is the day when you shall leave for your respective destinations. Engage in some activities if you have booked some other activities with us. What our customers say about us

Tara & Antoine from Montreal, in the Himalayas

With the Great help and knowledge of Ramesh from NMT, I have experienced this beautiful Trek and discovered other parts of Himalayans mountains during a 16 Day journey, starting from Jiri, with an excellent guide named Tara.

This an excellent way to keep in shape, meet wonderful local people, eat organic food (Dhal Bat Takari…), discover remote and amazing landscapes, encounter wildlife, colourful plants, and feel the energy of continuous rivers & waterfalls.

I suggest you to choose the right time to go trekking in the Himalayas, since the weather can greatly alter your experience with the mountains. I was here in November, we had clear skyes everyday, so we had the opportunity to have clear vistas on the many imposing mountains that form this unique region on Planet Earth.

Tara, Ramesh, and all Nepalese and foreigners I met during this trip have provided me an unparalled experience with discovering Nepal. I highly recommend to travel either alone or as a couple This is the best way to meet and share with others.

Nepalese people, examplified by people at NMT, are happy, sincere, honest, hardworking, proud, outreaching, and most of all Unique. You won’t find any other Culture like Nepal anywhere else on Earth. There is also in Kathmandu lot’s of good restaurants, my favourite Indian food.

Excellent Multi-Day Family Trek in Nepal Everest Region

Ramesh, the owner, was our guide 15 years ago when we were last in Nepal, so we were delighted to return when he has his own company – he did not disappoint! He helped us plan an itinerary with our three children (aged 13, 11 and 8 years) that was challenging but never too much. He set us up with a wonderful guide (Dal) and two porters, Hem (also a guide at times – experienced, patient and calm) and Arjun (young and energetic). Sometimes now, back at work in Canada on a stressful day, I try to channel Hem’s calmness. They became our extended family and we were sad to leave them all at the end.

Ramesh is kind, helpful and honest and has extensive guiding experience himself; we highly recommend him and his company. We stayed at Hotel Horizon in Thamel (Kathmandu) which was ideally located and served our purposes well with a nice courtyard for tea and breakfast.

We did the early part of the Everest trek – starting at Shivalaya near Jiri and staying in teahouses. This part is much quieter than the trek onwards from Lukla, and also with the kids we wanted to avoid high altitudes. I love those earlier parts with the green terraced hills and the people (both Nepalis and trekkers) are much friendlier as it’s not as busy. The highest we slept at was Namche Bazaar (day trips from there) although the kids were totally fine on all the passes so we likely could have gone higher. It was a wonderful experience for all of us. Just a warning though, the long drive in is not for the faint of heart (or stomach!) though, so I’d recommend using Gravol (or similar) if you get motion sickness. After trekking we flew back out of Lukla which of course is also not for the faint of heart! Make sure you allow extra time at the end as people often get stuck in Lukla for a few days due to weather.

This was our third trip to Nepal so we knew what to expect although it’s certainly gotten busier and the omnipresence of cell phones was a surprise. Our first trip many years ago we did without a guide, and although we were fine, we realized the experience is so much better with a guide so we would never do without again. We also know people that recently did the Manaslu trek and loved that, so that will likely be our next trip, which unfortunately will likely be a few years out.

Thanks so much to Ramesh for organizing our trip, to his team for taking such wonderful care of us and giving us amazing memories! Nepal is such a wonderful country and we were thrilled to be able to finally share it with our whole family. We look forward to coming back again as soon as we can! Although we have visited many countries, Nepal holds a very special place in our hearts.
