Leaving Lukla, we shall branch off the main trail to Everest Base Camp and follow the trail that takes us through small settlements and wood yards to the section decorated by dense forest that is home to silver fir, birch, rhododendron, and pine trees. Intermittently, you shall walk through the hillside with the view of mountains and past several small stone houses, across rickety suspension and wooden bridges over smaller streams at several places. After trekking for some hours on the steep hillside over Lukla we shall reach Chutanga, the last permanent settlement in our route to Mera Peak before rejoining the trail after peak climbing. Surrounded by green hills from all sides, this place provides a good environment for acclimatization as well as for trekkers. Stay overnight in Chutanga.

Day 5 : Trek to Thuli Kharka (4,320m/13,200ft) via Zwatra la (4,600m/14,720ft): 5-6 hours::

Today we shall have Thuli Kharka as the destination which is within the premise of Makalu Barun National Park. Starting with the climb along the ridges of surrounding hills including the Sebu Danda, we shall traverse gradually in a steep trail that leads us to the ridge of Kalo Himal Ridge of the Nau Lekh range of hills. Ups and downs along the trail continue as we are surrounded by lush, green, and, misty hills and forests that lead us to the foothills of Zatrwa La Pass. We shall march past smaller Chortens, stone cairns, and decorated by prayer flags as we reach the summit of the pass (4600m) with cairns and prayer flags. Ahead of this pass we shall enter into Hinku valley and leave the Khumbu valley. From the pass, on a clear weather day, we shall have a beautiful view of Dudh Koshi River, Hinku Valley, and Lumding and Karyolung Peaks. Descending from the pass we shall traverse for around an hour to reach the destination of Thuli Kharka, a summer grazing land. Stay overnight in Thuli Kharka.

Day 6 : Trek to Kothe (3,600 m, /11,808ft): 5-6 hours::

In another beautiful trekking day, we start our trek after witnessing beautiful sunrise over the lush hills. With ups and downs from the settlement of Thuli Kharka in this trail, we shall then trek past Chetarwa, a viewpoint with beautiful views of Mera Peak and other mountain peaks, and join the Mera Peak Trek trail at Tashing Ongama. Trekking ahead of this seasonal settlement with some tea shops, we shall have a long trek through a narrow path through the dense forest of pine, mosses, and rhododendron trees. Accompanied by the Hinku River and surrounded by varieties of flora and fauna, we shall walk past some grazing areas, the foothill of Gondishung peak, and across streams to reach the destination of Kothe, a settlement surrounded by high hills and huge boulders. En route, you shall trek through several ridges, steep and long sections of trail. Stay overnight in Kothe.

Day 7 : Kothe to Thaknak (4,350m/14,270ft): 3-4 hours::

As known to you, we shall have a gradual walk in the trail for the purpose of supporting rapid acclimatization before ascending the challenging Mera Peak. We start our trek from the riverbed of Hinku River and continue along the rocky path, which may remind us of a glacial outburst, upstream of the river. Slowly and gradually we enter into the high altitudes to the vicinity of the Himalayas trekking past the summer pastures of Yak and other animals above the river. We shall then reach Gondishung which is a seasonal herder’s settlement and a popular spot for lunch among the trekkers. An ancient Tibetan-styled monastery of around 200 years old is worth the visit in Gondishung, on the west bank of Hinku Drangka. From here we shall encounter loose boulders, the confluence of Hinku and Sanu Drangka, and have a view of Kusum Kangaru and Peak 43 mountains before trekking to Thaknak, a summer settlement with primitive lodges and some tea shops. Stay overnight in Thaknak.

Day 8 : Thaknak to Khare (5,045m/16,486ft): 2-3 hours::

Today we have a short trek to Khare as we shall be staying here for a couple of days for acclimatization before ascending to Mera Peak. The trek takes us through the lateral moraines of Dig Glacier, gradually and enjoying the beautiful scenery of surrounding glaciers and mountains. Ahead of the lateral moraines, we shall reach the large graze land known as Dig Kharka with a beautiful view of the surrounding Himalayas including the Charpate Himal Peak, which comes to the scene slowly. Following the hike, through the pasture, we shall climb through a steep trail and follow through the moraines to the terminal face of Hinku Nup and Shar Glaciers. We then cross the glacial stream and across the steep trail full of boulders and rocks, to reach the destination of Khare. From Khare, which we shall use as our base camp before the ascent to the peak, you shall have an excellent view of Mera Peak. Stay overnight in Khare.

Day 9 : Rest day in Khare/Acclimatisation::

Before we head on to summiting the Mera Peak, today we shall explore the surrounding of Khare and have some preparations to aid in the process of acclimatization. On this rest day, we shall do some ice climbing training from our climbing guide besides the exploration of the area. For the practice of ice-climbing using the climbing equipment of an ice axe, crampons, harnesses, ascenders, climbing boots, and ropes besides others, we shall be climbing to the start of the Mera Glacier. This practice session is very essential and therefore you should give proper attention to the instructions provided by the climbing guide. This shall be a determining factor for your successful climb to the Mera Peak and progress further in the trek as your confidence and climbing skill shall further enhance. After this practice session that includes fun and precious learning of the skills necessary for the climb, we shall return to our base at Khare. We shall have a final check of the climbing equipment and pack our bags before moving ahead toward Mera Peak. Stay overnight in Khare.

Day 10 : Khare to Mera Base Camp (5,300m/17,384ft): 3-4 hours::

In the first step of the final phase before climbing the peak, we shall today ascend to the Mera Base Camp. In this increasingly strenuous trek with several boulders, rocks, and lateral moraines of the glacier, we shall reach the terminal face of the Mera Glacier where we had trained the previous day. We shall now equip ourselves with crampons, harnesses, mountaineering boots, and ice axes, and climb gradually ahead along a steep trail full of snow to reach the bowl-like landscape. We shall now climb to the Mera La Pass (5,415m) and up the ridges before descending to the Mera Base Camp to find a suitable place for camping on the side of Honku Himal Peak. Enjoy the breathtaking views from this pass and relish the first climbing experience in the mountains on reaching this exposed pass of Mera La. Climbers may have some more training if they feel that previous practice in Khare was less than sufficient. Overnight at Mera Base Camp in a tented camp.

Day 11 : Mera Base Camp to High camp (5,780m/18,958ft): 4-5 hours::

The destination for today is the High Camp. The climb to this launchpad for the final ascent starts with the climb to the Mera La Pass after which we shall turn south and trek along the snow slopes of Mera Peak which is relatively easy angled as per Himalayan standard. We shall carefully climb ahead as there may be crevasses; the walk around these crevasses is not much problem in normal weather conditions though their depth is impressive for the trekkers. Ahead of the crevasses, we have a slightly steeper slope which is covered with snow and is rather an open path that leads to the High Camp. After reaching the High Camp, we have a magnificent view of the soaring Himalayas including Everest, Makalu, and Nuptse besides other neighboring peaks, while the towering Lhotse Wall is directly ahead of us. Marked by large cairns, High Camp provides a beautiful view of the sunset over the walls of the Himalayas and the sight of most of the route to the summit. We shall have a limited camping space and thereby shall have to share the tents. Stay overnight in High Camp.

Day 12 : Mera High Camp to Summit (6,461m/21,1907ft) and back to Khare (5045m/16,547ft): 8-9 hours::

A big day is waiting for us! With the target of ascending Mera Peak, we start our final climb to the peak before sunrise, and in a slow and gradual fashion, we march ahead on the trail. In this non-technical climb in the thin air, we continue trekking along the ridge and progress ahead using our ice axes and crampons and skip the crevasses beneath us in the trail. During the ascent and before the climb red glowing orb of the sun appears above the high Himalayas displaying wonderful scenery in front of us. On reaching the foot of the final summit through the trail, initially ascending on the left-hand ridge and shifting to the right ridge, we take some rest before making the final push to the summit. We shall now take on the steepest part of this climb and with the help of Jumar, we keep on climbing towards the summit of the peak. On reaching the summit, we shall have a marvelous sight and a euphoric feeling of accomplishment. Triumphed, you shall have a magnificent view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Lobuche East, Chamlang, and other neighboring peaks which shall make you forget every pain and strain undergone to reach this summit. After spending some time in the peak and capturing some memories of this wonderful achievement, we shall descend down to Khare through High Camp and Base Camp for an overnight stay. After a long and satisfying day have an overnight stay at Khare.

Day 13 : Extra Day at Khare::

We have this day set for some contingencies if any occur during our expedition. The contingencies may be in the form of bad weather thereby delaying the climb, climbers requiring more than expected time for acclimatization, and many more. If everything happens as planned, this extra day at Khare may be used for other activities or used for covering for the next day’s trek.

Day 14 : Kongma Dingma to Seto Pokhara via Honku Valley [5,035m/16,519ft]: 5-6 hrs::

On a consecutive day of trekking and climbing above 5000-meter altitude, we shall today trek to Seto Pokhari via Honku valley. Having climbed the challenging Mera Peak we shall trek at the higher altitude above 5000m in general. Initially, after a downhill trek from Kongma Dingma, we shall traverse into the upper yak pastures in the remote areas of this beautiful valley. After some trekking, we shall trek northwards for the Amphu Laptsa Pass, past the sight of Chamlang Peak, and ahead in the trail we have Mt. Baruntse dominating the view. Accompanied by the glacial river of Hongku River, we shall proceed ahead through the landscape where the high Himalayas gradually come into view as we slowly reach the glacial lakes of Pach Pokhari and Seto Pokhari. Towards the end of today’s trek, we have a view of Everest and Lhotse. Stay overnight in Seto Pokhari in a camp.

Day 15 : Seto Pokhari to Amphu Lapcha Base Camp (South) [5,650m/18,536 ft]: 5-6 hrs::

The trek today shall be from the naturally scenic and rich Seto Pokhari, one of the five beautiful glacial lakes at the foothills of Amphu Lapcha Pass. We shall trek along the trail that leads us through one of the most remote terrains in the region and hence doesn’t generally encounter any trekkers provided it is a very busy trekking season. Starting with a steep trekking trail beyond the White Lake or Seto Pokhari in the upper basin of Honku valley, we then walk on the region dominated by glaciers and glacial lakes, experience the raw wilderness of the valley, and continue with the close-up view of soaring Chamlang Peak (7,321m) that flaunts its hanging glaciers and snowy flanks. After a strenuous walk in the upper basin of Honku valley, we reach the south base camp of Amphu Lapcha Pass. Stay overnight in Amphu Lapcha Base Camp (South).

Day 16 : Amphu Lapcha Base Camp (South) to Amphu Lapcha Base Camp (North) [5,300m/17,385 ft]: 6-7 hrs::

We start the ascent to this challenging pass in the Everest region early in the morning. The reason behind this is that the ascent through the pass involves a tough trek on the slopes with rock, ice, and snow and the early morning hike shall allow us stable snow before it gets melted and unstable after sunrise. As we climb gradually from the south base camp of the pass, the trail initially is with more of a comfortable angle, and when we reach the last section of the climb to the summit of the pass, the trail twists and turns through the slopes covered with snow which make the ascent more difficult. We may use rope if necessary during the ascent to this pass. While climbing we have a beautiful view of sunrise over the peaks of Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga. On reaching the peak of the summit decorated by prayer flags and cairns, we have a marvelous view of the Himalayas including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and other picturesque mountains. Descent from the summit of the pass has a steep trail in store for us so we shall make a cautious and slow descent to the base camp of the pass on its northern side. Stay overnight in Amphu Lapcha Base Camp (North) and have a good rest.

Day 17 : Amphu Lapcha Base Camp to Pangboche [3,930m/12,893ft]: 5-6 hrs::

Now that we have ascended over the challenging Mera Peak and the Amphu Lapcha Pass, we shall have a rather pleasant trek to Pangboche, all consoling to the mind and lungs. The trek begins with a walk over the Amphu Lapcha Glacier and the lateral moraines of the glacier, and the landscape surrounded by moraines of other glaciers and a view of majestic peaks to reach the settlement of Chhukung, the base of ascent to Chhukung Ri. Ahead of the trail, we join the company of the Imja River and enter the valley of Khumbu. In a walk that becomes increasingly comfortable and surrounded by lushness, we reach Pangboche, home to the oldest monastery in Khumbu. The pleasure of reaching Pangboche after days of strenuous walking in some of the most strenuous and remote terrains in the region is delightful. Stay overnight in Pangboche.

Day 18 : Pangboche to Namche Bazaar [3,440m/11,286 ft]: 5-6 hrs::

Starting the day with a beautiful sunrise over the Himalayas, we shall today head for the unofficial Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar. We move out of the alpine terrain and enter the lushness of pine forest as we have an ascent to Tengboche on a trail that is rather steep and hence requires a cautious, gradual descent through the section popular for the sight of rare wildlife including Monal, Musk Deer, Blue Sheep, and others. This trek past numerous Chortens shall lead us to the ancient monastery in Tengboche and ahead along another steep trail to the riverbed of the mighty Dudh Koshi River via the settlement of Phunke Tenga. Reach the trail junction of Gokyo and Everest region along with stone steps and then head through the dense forest of oak, pine, and rhododendron to Namche Bazaar. En route, we have some beautiful Chortens and the beautiful view of Lhotse, the summit of the tallest Everest, and the sight of scenic Tengboche besides the sight of rare wildlife including snow leopards, colorful pheasant, mountain goats, and many more. Take a relaxed sleep in this settlement of Namche famous for Sherpa hospitality.

Day 19 : Namche Bazaar to Lukla: 6-7 hrs::

In this last trekking section of our adventure, we shall start the trek with a steep descent from Namche to reach the mighty Dudh Koshi River and then across the vertiginous suspension bridge at Larja Dobhan. Walk slowly as you shall have your shaky legs battling against the rocky terrain which shall gradually turn into a more easy and leveled trekking trail. We exit the sanctuary of Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo and proceed ahead on the trail across several suspension bridges decorated with prayer flags, beautiful valleys, culturally rich settlements, Mani walls, prayer wheels, dense forest of rhododendron, oak, and pine to reach Lukla. From various points in the trail, we have a view of mountains including Everest, Kongde Ri, Kusum Kanggaru, and several other peaks. Stay overnight in Lukla.

Day 20 : Fly back to Kathmandu::

We shall leave the beautiful Khumbu region in an early morning flight to Kathmandu that takes us over beautiful valleys and terraced farmlands, cascading mountains and fast-flowing rivers, and a close-up view of the glossy Himalayas. After landing at the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport, you shall be transferred to the hotel. Later in the day, you may go for an exploration of the streets of Kathmandu and for some souvenir shopping for your near and dear ones back in your place. Stroll around to other sites if you are interested. Enjoy the farewell meal of this adventurous journey in the evening with fellow trekkers. Stay overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 21 : Departure Day::

Here comes the end to your adventure of Mera Peak Climbing with Amphu Laptsa Pass. Unless you are interested in extending your stay in this beautiful and going for other packages of ours, we shall drop you at the airport as per your flight schedule. My wife and I arranged a Mera Peak – Amphu Lapsa loop with NMT. The weather was unusually cold with snow every day so we had to make substantial changes in the plan. NMT was helpful, flexible and responsive to making the most of what we could get done. We’d definitely use NMT again.

Awesome Trekking and Climbing Agency

I had an awesome experience with Nepal mountain trekkers on my Island peak climb. Ramesh was extremely attentive and managed every aspect of the trip very professionally. My guide Manish Shimkhada was great! He was very friendly, knowledgeable and managed to adapt the trip to my preference as we went along. At Kathmandu, I was accommodated at the Green Horizon hotel which was a great choice given the location and nice inside garden.
I would highly recommend Nepal mountain trekkers and will certainly use them again in future trips in to Nepal, Bhutan or Tibet, both for trekking and climbing.
