Trip introduction

Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek – Where Wilderness Meets the Everest Trail

Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek is one of Nepal’s most thrilling and least-traveled high-altitude adventures. It connects the mystical Rolwaling Valley with the legendary Khumbu (Everest) region, offering a raw and unforgettable Himalayan experience. This trek is perfect for seasoned trekkers and ambitious mountaineers who crave more than a typical trail.

From turquoise glacial lakes and soaring snow-capped peaks to quiet Sherpa villages and technical alpine crossings, the journey blends culture, challenge, and remoteness. Moreover, it’s an epic adventure in Nepal for anyone who seeks to escape the crowded trails and explore the hidden corners of the Himalayas.

Often overshadowed by the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Tashi Lapcha Pass route is a true gem. If you’re looking for off-the-beaten-path treks in Nepal, this one delivers solitude, endurance, and jaw-dropping scenery all the way through.

Where is Tashi Lapcha Pass and Why is it Special?

The Tashi Lapcha Pass, at 5,755 meters, sits at the border of Rolwaling Valley (Dolakha district) and the Khumbu region (Solukhumbu). Located just south of Mt. Pachermo (6,273m), this high alpine pass is guarded by towering glacial ridges of the Rolwaling Himal.

Furthermore, crossing this pass feels like a real Himalayan expedition. You’ll walk on ice, navigate loose moraines, and sometimes use ropes. For experienced trekkers and mountaineers, this offers a perfect mix of challenge and thrill.

The trail transitions dramatically—from forested hills and Buddhist villages in Rolwaling to massive glaciers and bustling Sherpa settlements in Khumbu. Consequently, it’s a unique cross-region trek that brings both serenity and adventure together.

Route Overview: From Rolwaling to Khumbu

The trek begins in Simigaun, a hillside village in Dolakha. From there, you follow trails through rhododendron forests to Beding, a spiritual Sherpa village. As the trail continues, you move deeper into Rolwaling, reaching Na village and the stunning Tso Rolpa Lake, one of Nepal’s largest glacial lakes.

Afterward, the adventure intensifies as you climb toward Trakarding Glacier, preparing to cross the technical Tashi Lapcha Pass. The crossing itself is a highlight—icy paths, dramatic views, and a sense of real achievement. Eventually, after the pass, you descend into Thame and reach Namche Bazaar, the vibrant heart of the Khumbu region.

This journey blends the hidden tranquility of Rolwaling with the classic trekking atmosphere of Everest. Thus, it becomes a perfect Himalayan combo for serious adventurers.

Best Season for Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek

The best time to trek this route is from March to May and September to November. These months bring clear skies, stable weather, and better glacier conditions.

In contrast, avoid trekking during June to August, as monsoon rains can make trails slippery and limit visibility. Likewise, December to February brings extreme cold and deep snow—crossing the pass can be dangerous or even impossible.

For more remote treks in these seasons, also explore our Pikey Peak Trek and Dudh Kunda Trek.

Difficulty Level and Required Fitness

The Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek is classified as strenuous. This trek includes high altitudes (up to 5,755m), long trekking days (6–8 hours), and glacier crossings. As a result, you need excellent physical fitness, good stamina, and ideally, previous experience above 4,000m.

Technical sections—especially around Trakarding Glacier and the pass—may require crampons, ropes, or an ice axe. Fortunately, our expert guides and full crew provide all necessary support, training, and equipment.

This trek is not recommended for beginners. However, for adventure lovers, it’s one of the most rewarding challenges Nepal offers.

Permits and Logistics

To complete this trek, you’ll need a combination of trekking and climbing permits:

Thankfully, all permits are included in our package. We handle the paperwork so you can focus on the adventure.

Accommodation and Meals

From Simigaun to Na, basic teahouses are available. From there on, the trek enters full wilderness mode. Between Na and Thame, we provide fully supported camping with tents, kitchen staff, and nutritious hot meals.

Once you descend into Thame, Namche, and Lukla, you’ll stay in cozy mountain lodges with standard facilities. Moreover, meals include dal bhat, pasta, soups, potatoes, rice, tea, and energy-rich snacks to fuel your trek.

Extend Your Adventure

Want to level up the challenge? Pachermo Peak Climbing (6,273m) is a perfect summit to add after the pass. It’s non-technical but high in elevation, ideal for acclimatized trekkers.

Alternatively, after reaching Lukla, you can join our Island Peak Climb, trek to Everest Base Camp, or continue the Classic Jiri to Everest trail for a longer Himalayan journey.

Detail Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m):

Your adventure begins as you land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Upon arrival, our representative will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Thamel, Nepal’s vibrant tourist hub. After check-in, you can stroll around local markets or enjoy a rooftop café while soaking in views of Kathmandu’s hills and temples. In the evening, a pre-trek briefing introduces you to your trekking guide and provides essential updates on the Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek itinerary, permits, and safety precautions.

Day 2 : Drive from Kathmandu to Gongar via Charikot (1,350m):

After an early breakfast, we set off on a long and scenic drive northeastward toward Dolakha. The road winds through lush hills, rivers, and picturesque villages. We pass through Charikot and continue toward Gongar Khola, the starting point of our Rolwaling Valley trek. This region is rarely visited, making it ideal for trekkers seeking off-the-beaten-path trekking in Nepal. Overnight stay in a local teahouse.

Day 3 : Trek from Gongar to Simigaon (2,000m):

Crossing suspension bridges and trekking beside the Rolwaling River, today’s walk ascends steadily through rhododendron forests and scattered hamlets. The trail takes us to Simigaon, a Sherpa and Tamang village perched on a ridge with views of Gauri Shankar (7,145m)—a sacred mountain in Tibetan Buddhism. This marks your first real immersion into the spiritual culture of Rolwaling.

Day 4 : Trek from Simigaon to Dongang (2,790m):

We enter the Gaurishankar Conservation Area, following a winding trail through dense forests and mossy rocks. Today’s path is peaceful yet challenging as it gains elevation. You’ll notice the drop in temperature and vegetation as you move deeper into the Rolwaling Himalayas. Dongang is a quiet resting place surrounded by forests and waterfalls.

Day 5 : Trek from Dongang to Beding (3,690m):

Continuing through fir and pine forests, the trail gradually opens to alpine meadows and yak pastures. Today we reach Beding, the largest Sherpa settlement in Rolwaling Valley. Beding is culturally significant and home to an ancient monastery built into the cliffs. This is a great place to interact with locals and learn more about their Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

Day 6 : Trek from Beding to Na Gaon (4,180m):

We hike further into the remote valley, following glacial streams toward Na Village, a seasonal yak herding settlement. Located beneath the towering peak of Chobutse, Na provides spectacular views and is a perfect spot for altitude acclimatization. The region is starkly beautiful and offers a real sense of Himalayan isolation.

Day 7 : Acclimatization Day in Na (4,180m):

To adjust to the increasing altitude, we take a rest day in Na. Short hikes to nearby ridges or towards Yalung Ri Base Camp are available for better acclimatization. This day is crucial for preparing the body for higher altitudes as we approach Tso Rolpa Lake and Tashi Lapcha Pass, two key highlights of the trek.

Day 8 : Trek from Na to Tso Rolpa Lake (4,580m):

One of the trek’s most scenic days, we walk along the lateral moraines of the Tso Rolpa Glacier to reach Tso Rolpa Lake, a turquoise glacial lake cradled between dramatic peaks. The region is raw, rugged, and increasingly glaciated. Tso Rolpa is one of the largest glacial lakes in Nepal and serves as a visual centerpiece for high-altitude Rolwaling trekking routes.

Day 9 : Trek from Tso Rolpa to Trakarding Glacier Camp (4,800m):

The trail becomes more technical as we ascend steep glacial terrain. Today’s hike involves navigating through rocky moraines and glacier ice, so a slow pace is maintained. Surrounded by towering ice walls and seracs, we camp at Trakarding Glacier under the stars—a surreal experience that defines glacier trekking in Nepal.

Day 10 : Trek from Trakarding Glacier to Tashi Lapcha Base Camp (5,200m):

Crossing the icy Trakarding Glacier, we make our way toward Tashi Lapcha Base Camp, located below the daunting pass. Crampons, ropes, and alpine gear may be required today, depending on conditions. The campsite is set against the backdrop of Pachermo Peak (6,273m) and offers epic sunset views over the snowfields.

Day 11 : Cross Tashi Lapcha Pass (5,755m) and Camp at Tashi Phuk (5,100m):

Today is the most demanding yet rewarding day. We begin early, ascending steep snow slopes to Tashi Lapcha Pass. Reaching the pass rewards us with panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Pachermo Peak. After crossing, we descend cautiously to Tashi Phuk, a glacial basin on the Khumbu side of the Himalayas. Welcome to the Everest region!

Day 12 : Trek from Tashi Phuk to Thame (3,820m):

From the high alpine zone, we descend into greener pastures and traditional Sherpa settlements. The trail to Thame—a culturally rich village known for its monastery—introduces trekkers to the classic Khumbu culture. You’ll feel the contrast in landscapes and infrastructure as we enter the more developed Everest region trail network.

Day 13 : Trek from Thame to Namche Bazaar (3,440m):

The trail to Namche Bazaar, the bustling capital of the Khumbu, is easier in gradient and filled with lodges, bakeries, and internet cafes. After days in remote wilderness, reaching Namche feels like returning to civilization. This is a great day to rest, enjoy a shower, and reflect on your incredible journey through Tashi Lapcha Pass.

Day 14 : Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,840m):

Our final day of trekking follows the Dudh Koshi River through rhododendron forests and charming villages. We retrace the famous Everest Base Camp trail in reverse and end the trek in Lukla, where your celebration with the team begins.

Day 15 : Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu:

A short yet scenic flight takes you back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. Enjoy a free evening to rest, shop for souvenirs, or enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow adventurers.

Day 16 : Departure Day:

Depending on your flight schedule, we will transfer you to the airport. You leave with unforgettable memories of trekking across Tashi Lapcha Pass, experiencing Nepal’s remote Rolwaling Valley, and stepping into the world of Himalayan alpine adventure.
