Everest Three Passes Trek
Everest Three Passes Trek gives you an overall Everest Trekking experience. You get to cross three high passes – Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La; along with an opportunity to visit Everest Base Camp. Ascending towards Gokyo Ri and Kala Patthar gives us breathtaking panoramic views of Everest and other surrounding peaks. It is considered to be a challenging trek and is preferred by adventure lovers who want to have it all.
This adventure is not just about Everest. It’s about discovering every highlight of the Khumbu region—from peaceful alpine lakes to remote Sherpa villages, and legendary Himalayan viewpoints to thrilling glacier crossings.
Overview of Everest Three Pass Trek
The Everest Three Pass trek adventure starts as we board a scenic mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. And then we trek towards Namche Bazaar, the home of Sherpas. After acclimatizing at Namche for two nights, we follow the popular Everest trail. Through Tengboche, Dingboche, and rest for another day at Chukkung; before crossing the first high pass of Kongma La at an altitude of 5,535m. Then we will be visiting Everest Base Camp via Lobuche and Gorakshep following a hike up to Kalapathar for panoramic views of snow-capped mountains including Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other neighboring peaks.
In terms of high-altitude trekking, the Three Passes Trek in Nepal is the most comprehensive Everest adventure—traversing different valleys, passes, and scenic trails that traditional Everest Base Camp trekkers rarely explore.
Dzong La, Cho La, and Renjo La | The 3 High Passes
We continue our trek via Dzong La before crossing the next pass of Cho La; which finally takes us to the pristine glacial lakes of Gokyo. We then hike up to Gokyo Ri for great panoramic views. From there, we make our way towards the final pass of Renjo La. Spending a night at Marlung, we descend towards Namche Bazar, Lukla, and fly back to Kathmandu. The Everest Three Passes Trek is all about experiencing the Khumbu region’s best high passes.
These three Himalayan passes aren’t just high—they are gateways to some of the most scenic alpine environments in the world. If you’re wondering which trek combines the best of Gokyo Lakes, Everest Base Camp, and off-the-beaten-path mountain crossings, this is the answer.
Who can join Three Passes Trek and how?
The Everest Three Pass Trek is perfect for any adventure lover who possesses a good level of physical fitness and the ability to cross three high-altitude passes. In order to avoid rainfall and for clear views, the best periods to undertake this trek are:
- From mid-April to May in the Spring
- And from mid-September to mid-November in Autumn.
The trek is physically demanding, but with proper acclimatization and guidance, it is achievable for dedicated trekkers. No prior mountaineering experience is necessary, but it helps if you’ve trekked in high altitudes before.
Tip: If you’re looking for a more gradual entry into the Khumbu region, consider our Gokyo Valley Trek or Everest Base Camp via Jiri for deeper acclimatization and a cultural detour.
If you’re planning to combine the Everest Three High Passes with a technical climb, our Island Peak Climbing or Lobuche Peak Climb offers an incredible way to summit a Himalayan peak after completing your trekking loop.
Why Everest Three Passes Trek is Nepal’s Best High Pass Trek
The Three Passes Trek offers what most treks in Nepal don’t—a complete loop, instead of a straight in-and-out trail. You’re not retracing your steps. Instead, you’re weaving through the entire Khumbu region, gaining altitude gradually, and descending through new paths with changing landscapes every day.
Other treks may take you to a base camp or a single destination. But this Everest High Passes Trek delivers an all-encompassing journey—Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, Gokyo Lakes & Gokyo Ri, and three alpine passes above 5,300m, all in one expedition.
This makes it one of the most comprehensive and high-reward trekking routes in Nepal, ideal for trekkers who want adventure and variety in their Himalayan experience.
Accommodation and Food Along the Trail | Everest 3 Passes Trek
Throughout the Everest Three Passes Trek, you’ll stay in locally owned teahouses that provide comfortable rooms and warm meals. As you move higher, the amenities become simpler, but the hospitality never fades.
Typical meals include dal bhat, noodle soups, fried rice, pasta, eggs, and Tibetan bread. Tea, coffee, and boiled water are always available. Carrying some high-calorie snacks and electrolyte sachets is recommended, especially for pass days.
Safety, Altitude, and Acclimatization for the Three High Pass Trekking
One of the key challenges of this trek is altitude sickness. That’s why our itinerary includes multiple acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, and Gokyo. These are crucial in helping your body adjust before crossing the high passes.
We also carry a first-aid kit, pulse oximeter, and oxygen if needed. In case of emergency, helicopter evacuation is available. We highly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering up to 6,000m.
Permits Required for the 3 Pass Trek
To undertake this trek, you will need:
- Sagarmatha National Park Permit
- Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit
- TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)
All permits are arranged by Nepal Mountain Trekkers, so you can focus on the experience while we handle the paperwork.
