Nar Phu Valley Trek with Kang La Pass and Thorong La
Our Nar Phu Valley Trek with Kang La Pass and Thorong La offers a great chance to discover off the beaten path, around the largely unexplored valleys of Nar Phu, and then to connect with the more popular trails of the Annapurna Region. This trek involves crossing through the high passes of Kang La. And Thorong La as well as revealing attractive cultural and religious insights at the pilgrimage site of Muktinath.
Overview of Nar Phu Valley Trek with Kang La and Thorong La Pass
The Nar Phu Kang La Pass Trek with Thorong La begins as we drive from Kathmandu to Jagat. We will follow the popular trail of Annapurna Round Trek until we reach Koto, from where we make our way towards the less visited villages of Meta, Phu, and Nar. After properly acclimatizing in these villages, we head towards the crossing at Kang La Pass. And then to Ngwal and Manag with stunning views of the great Annapurna Himalayan Ranges on the way.
The Nar Phu Valley trekking trail then connects back to the Annapurna Round. And we leave behind high-altitude Yak grazing fields and picturesque villages. We will also discover Tibetan-influenced culture and traditions with spectacular views of snow-capped mountains during this trek. Then, we cross Thorong La Pass, which leads us to pilgrimage Muktinath, Jomsom, then fly back to Pokhara, and finally terminate our trek adventure with a scenic drive towards Kathmandu.
Why Choose the Nar Phu Valley Trek with Kang La and Thorong La Pass?
The Nar Phu Valley Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and rewarding treks, taking you into the heart of the restricted Nar and Phu Valleys—a hidden Himalayan gem near the Tibetan border. Unlike the crowded trails of the Annapurna Circuit, the Nar Phu Trek offers raw Himalayan wilderness, secluded valleys, ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture, and rugged high-mountain terrain.
One of the highlights of this journey is crossing Kang La Pass (5,320m), which offers jaw-dropping panoramic views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and many other snow-covered giants. Later, the adventure culminates with the challenging ascent of Thorong La Pass (5,416m)—one of the highest trekking passes in the world—making this trek perfect for trekkers seeking a blend of off-the-beaten-path exploration and classic Himalayan high passes.
Highlights of Trekking in Nar and Phu Valley
Trekkers choosing this route get the unique opportunity to:
- Explore the untouched Tibetan villages of Nar and Phu
- Camp or stay in local teahouses surrounded by yak herders and ancient monasteries
- Traverse both Kang La Pass and Thorong La Pass in one epic circuit
- Witness contrasting landscapes—from narrow gorges and deep canyons to wide alpine plateaus and glacial valleys
- Experience the spiritual energy of Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists
The Nar Phu Valley trek itinerary is ideal for adventure seekers who want to combine the wild isolation of Nar Phu Valley with the iconic sections of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. By including both Kang La Pass and Thorong La, this journey offers one of the most comprehensive and high-altitude trekking experiences in Nepal.
Best time to trek Nar and Phu Valley with Kang La Pass
Our Nar Phu Kang La Pass Trek is best undertaken from April to June and from September to November. However, since Nar Phu Valley falls under the rain-shadow area and receives much less rainfall even during monsoon, this could be an option for Monsoon trekking in Nepal as well. You need to be strong and fit with the ability to rise to the physical challenge. Previous trekking experience is not mandatory but if you have already been to high altitudes before then it will be beneficial.
Who can join Nar Phu Kang La Pass Trek with Thorong La?
This trek is suitable for adventure seekers, photographers, and culture lovers who want to experience both remote Himalayan wilderness and iconic high passes like Kang La (5,320m) and Thorong La (5,416m). It is especially ideal for those who wish to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations while still linking with popular trails like the Annapurna Circuit.
Trekkers should be prepared for long walking days (6–9 hours daily), rapid altitude gain, and basic accommodation in remote villages. While prior experience helps, many fit beginners have successfully completed the trek with the help of experienced guides and proper acclimatization days built into the itinerary.
How to get Permits for Nar Phu Valley Trekking?
You can join this trek either by forming your own private group or by signing up for one of our fixed departure group treks. We handle all the permits (Nar Phu Restricted Area Permit, ACAP, and TIMS), accommodations, guides, and logistics, making it a hassle-free adventure from arrival to departure.
